2017 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY THEME

WE AND PARTNER THEME: WOMEN AT WORK

On March 8, we celebrated Women in ETF's 3rd Annual Global Bell Ringing Events for International Women’s Day by viewing the 'Ring the Bell for Gender Equality' ceremony at Bats Global Markets for the opening bell.

The Bats Bell Ringing was both well attended and extremely entertaining for the 75+ men and women that were able to participate.  The morning began with Laura Morrison, SVP, Global Head of Exchange Traded Products at Bats and Women in ETFs Global Governance Board Member welcoming the crowd to Bats offices, which – as luck would have it - overlook the Statue of Liberty. Laura gave an update on Bats business and staff, before passing the podium to Deborah Fuhr, Managing Partner of ETFGI, and External Organization Liaison for Women in ETFs, who highlighted important facts about WE as an organization, the incredible efforts of all those involved, and the WE partners across the globe who all contributed to the success of the 2017 Bell Ringing series.  Before Bats’ featured speaker was introduced, Jill Mavro, Managing Director, Head of ETF and Mutual Fund Research at State Street Global Advisors, and co-President of Women in ETFs, was asked to say a few words about the ‘Fearless Girl’ statue, which State Street organized to be installed facing Wall Street’s iconic Charging Bull. The new statue, which will be in situ for a month, represents a new symbol of women’s leadership.

Laura then introduced the featured speaker Liza Donnelly.  Liza has been a staff cartoonist for The New Yorker Magazine since 1992 and her work has also appeared in Forbes, Medium, CNN, Politico, Huffington Post, Daily Beast, Salon, The Nation, National Lampoon, Glamour and Good Housekeeping, amongst others. Liza began by giving her background and her career progression in a historically male dominated industry, which sounded more than a little similar to life in financial services.  Liza stressed the importance of always viewing herself as a cartoonist that just happened to be a woman, rather than a “woman” cartoonist - an idea that can be translated across all industries and businesses.  Liza presented to the group work of hers that focused on both women’s issues in general, while also promoting overall diversity, and shared other compelling cartoons from cartoonists (that also happen to be women) that she has had the opportunity to meet across the globe.  These were both impactful and powerful, even if the general tenor of the presentation was lighter and much more humorous with plenty of laughter.

Liza’s presentation wrapped up at 9:26 and the entire crowd moved over to the 9:30 AM Opening Bell where Laura and Liza were joined by Chris Concannon, President and COO of CBOE and prior CEO of Bats, to ring the bell.  The event concluded with more networking and the crowd left both connected, supportive and inspired.

For a second year, Women in ETFs was proud to partner with UN Global Compact, UN Women, the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, IFC, and the World Federation of Stock Exchanges.
