WE CANADA | CANADA CHAPTER LAUNCH EVENT

Opening & Welcome Remarks from Deborah Frame and Tanya Rowntree - Canadian Chapter Heads of Women in ETFs

The world’s first exchange traded fund was launched right here in Canada, the index-linked product that tracked the TSE 35 indices was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1990. We have seen exponential growth of the ETF Industry in the last 10 years.

Canada is the home to 9 ETF providers, over 400 listed ETFs and $80 Billion in assets. But the growth in Canada is in the early stages. Assets invested in the US-listed ETF industry hit a new record high of just under 2 Trillion dollars (US$ 1.92 Tn) as of October.

The ETF Ecosystem includes ETF and Index providers, Broker Dealers and Exchanges, ETF Investors and ETF Service Providers. And in attendance here tonight are women and a few men from both Toronto and Montreal who are stakeholders, working in each of these key areas of the industry.

The Global Women in ETFs organization was launched at the ETF.com Annual Conference in Florida back in January of this year. 150 women showed up for the launch there, twice the number that had been anticipated.

In 10 months the global Membership has reached over 600 members. In addition to the national organization there are now 7 Global chapters. US: New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, DC/Baltimore. Europe: London, Frankfurt. And officially, as of this evening ….Canada.

Our launch event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our event sponsor National Bank Financial Markets. And a special thank you to Grace Kim of National Bank who has been a wonderful advocate for Women In ETFs and instrumental in pulling the venue together.

The event featured networking, a few words from our host Susan Monteith, Executive Vice President & Managing Director, Client Strategy & People Development - National Bank Financial as well an enlightening talk by Dr. Pauline Shum, Professor of Finance at the Schulich School of Business on "The Evolution and Role of ETFs in Global Investing".
